Abstract

Background: Diabetes Mellitus is a disease condition that occurs when the pancreas cannot make insulin properly or when the body cannot function insulin optimally. Indonesia is ranked the fourth largest of all those with diabetes mellitus, which is 8.6% of the total population ranked above it are India, China, and the United States. Pharmacological interventions include oral and injectable antidiabetic drugs. Oral drugs include the biguanide group, sulfunilureas. Oral antidiabetic drugs are the drugs that are used more often. The first choice of drug in this patient is metformin. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the rationale for the use of Biguanid Diabetes Mellitus (Metformin) Drugs in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients at RSMH Palembang Period 1 July 2019-31 July 2020. Method: Research on the use of drugs has been carried out at RSMH Palembang for the period July 1, 2019-July 31, 2020. There are 48 medical records that meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data analysis using SPSS v25. Results: The characteristics of the most respondents in this study were in the age group 51-60 years and 61-70 years respectively (35.4%), female gender (60.4%), number of drugs per prescription 3 (27.1%). The rational use of Metformin is based on the criteria for the right dose (100%), the right frequency of drug administration (100%), the right duration of drug administration (100%), the right way of giving the drug (100%), and the right drug interaction (95.8%). Conclusion: The rationale for using Metformin in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is based on the criteria for the right dose (100%), the right frequency of drug administration (100%), the right time for giving the drug (100%), the right way of giving the drug (100%), and the right drug interaction (95.8%).
