Abstract

Teratogenic toxicity on ethanol extract of kenikir leaves (Cosmos caudatus H. B.K.) have been carried out to determine the safety if consumed by pregnant women. The dosage given is 250, 500, 750, and 1000 mg/kgBW. The extract administered during the organogenesis day of the 9th to 17th days of pregnancy, on the 18th day the mother mice were dissected to observe live fetus, dead fetus, implantation, resorpsion, fetus body weight, fetuslength, fetus external abnormalities, and fetus internal abnormalitie. The result of statistic analysis with ANOVA and DMRT (Duncan multiple range test) showed that the extract have a significant effect on dead fetus, fetus body weight, fetus length, hematoma, hemorrhage, delay of interparietal bone, asymmetric-shaped sternum bone and dumbbell-shaped asymmetric sternum (pvalue<0,05). The result of statistic analysis with Kruskall-Walis and Mann-Whitney showed that the extract have a significant effect on delay supraoccipital bone, sacrocaudal vertebra body, sacrocaudal vertebra curved, anterior proximal phalanx, posterior proximal and intermediate phalanx posterior (pvalue<0,05). of The administration of the extract at dose 250 mg/kgBW has caused a teratogenic effect, it can be conclude that the ethanolic extract of kenikir leaves has teratogenic effect on the fetus mice (Mus musculus).
