Abstract

Background: Decreasing of sweet taste sensitivity might cause someone to consume sweet food and drink excessively. Sweet taste sensitivity can be increased through visual factors, one of them is color. Some studies have reported that the use of jars with certain colors could increase sweetness rating. Pink, red, purple, and orange colors are commonly associated with sweet taste. This present study aimed to determine the effect of the color of the jar on sweet taste sensitivity. Method: This study was an observational analytical study with cross sectional research design which involved 20 students at the faculty of medicine, sriwijaya university, age between 18-25 years old. Sweet taste sensitivity was measured using sip and spit method using sucrose solution with concentration of 4,8, 9,7, 19,5 39, 78, 156 g/L which was given from the lowest concentration. Subjects were instructed for 5 seconds to look at the color of the jar (transparent as control, pink, red, purple, and orange) which contain sucrose solution. The lowest concentration that was interpreted correctly by the subject noted as taste sensitivity score. The data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis test. Result: The mean value of sweet taste sensitivity score in group of pink, red, purple, and orange jars was higher compared to transparent jars, with the highest value was shown in purple jars. There was no significant difference in sweet taste sensitivity between the color of the jar (p>0,05). Conclusion: Pink, red, purple, and orange jars could increase the sweet taste sensitivity, so hopefully by using those colors can reduce the consumption of sweet food and drink excessively. Keywords: jar, color, sweet taste sensitivity
