Abstract

The lightning phenomenon is the event of the release of electric charge that occurs in the atmosphere, followed by bursts of light and electromagnetic wave radiation due to the effect of the transfer of charge that occurs between the earth and the air. Lightning strikes that can cause fatal damage result in the creation of lightning protection efforts to protect from the effects of lightning strikes. To create optimal lightning protection, knowledge of everything about lightning itself and also lightning protection is required. This study aims to evaluate the external protection system of lightning that is being worked on the Avtur Pulau Layang Storage Station by using SketchUp software and then create a series of lightning SPP equivalents to perform large voltage calculations when lightning strikes using ATP-Draw software. . The simulation results using SketchUp software showed that all thirteen buildings must have external SPP to reduce the impact of lightning strikes, where the need for water termination and down conductor for each building is different. Furthermore, for the simulation results using ATP-Draw software, it was obtained that the voltage that arises when lightning strikes hit the down conductor of office building buildings, avtur tanks and street lights in sequence is 22,729 kV, 23,506 kV and 22,798 kV. The voltage value that arises in the tank building avtur is greater than the office building and street lights.
