Abstract

Steel is an composite of metal wherever its almosty used in all kinds of existing equipment such as construction machinery, buildings, household appliances and many others. The choice of material from steel is because it has varied properties and can be made to any shape. However be reversed many and larger used, material of steel its susceptible to be corrosion. Corrosion is a either form reduction in quality (quality of material) of metal due to the chemical reaction of the metal with its environment. The effects of this corrosion are destructive and detrimental, the rate of which can only be slowed. One of a way to slow down this speed is coating with other metals (electroplating). This study aims to determine the resistance of each type of coating to the corrosion rate of ST37 low carbon steel in the form of strip plates coated with other metals such as copper, tin, and nickel. Based on the result of research, tin plating has a breakdown percentage is 1.48%, for copper plating the breakdown of percentage is 1.57%, nickel plating with a breakdown of percentage is 2.47% and without a break down of percentage is 6.78%. Therefore each type of coating has be a different resistance to corrosion protection, tin-coated specimens are the specimens with the slowest corrosion propagation. As for specimens without all of coating have a breakdown of percentage is highest.
