Abstract

Background: Diarrhea was the second leading cause of death in children under five years old and has killed about 760,000 children each year. Distribution of mortality in the world expressed diarrhea remains a leading cause of death in children under 5 years of 15%. Toddler age group was the highest group had diarrhea with diarrhea incidence in Indonesia amounted to 10.2%. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional study design. The data used secondary data IDHS 2012 with a population of infants (0-59 months) some 45 607 people and a sample of 14.752 children under five in Indonesia. Data analysis was performed using univariate, bivariate, and multivariate logistic regression using a complex sample multiple predictive models. Results: 15.2% of children under five with diarrhea. The results of the analysis bivariat shows that there is a relationship variables maternal age (PR 2,015 95% CI 1,648-2,463), maternal education (PR 1,475 95% CI 1,140-1,910), area of residence (PR 1,177 95% CI 1,043-1,329), mother's occupation (PR 0,817 95% CI 0,732-0,913), socioeconomic (PR 1,703 95% CI 1,370-2,116), population density (PR 1,168 95% CI 1,038- 1,313), the source of drinking water (PR 1,178 95% CI 1,038-1,337), the type of excreta disposal site (PR 1,211 95% CI 1,085-1,352), the type of floor house (PR 1,188 95% CI 1,048-1,347), and the child's gender (PR 1,172 95% CI 1,051-1,307) and the incidence of diarrhea in children under five. Multivariate analysis showed that the most dominant variable related to the incidence of diarrhea in infants are maternal age after the controlled variable mother's occupation, income/wealth index, population density, and sex of the child (PR 1.911 95% CI 1,558-2,346). Conclusion: The most dominant variable related to the incidence of diarrhea in infants are maternal age variable after the controlled variable mother's occupation, income/wealth index, population density, and sex of the child.
