Abstract

Water spinach is actually an important vegetable in Indonesia. This research was to compare growth and yield, to study seed production, and to intercross several varieties of water spinach. Research was conducted in the experimental station at Agriculture Faculty, Sriwijaya University, Indralaya campus from August 2020 to April 2021. Research used a Randomized Block Design with three replications as blocks and three varieties, namely Bangkok, Bisi and Hapsari. This research consisted of two parts, to study of growth and yield and to study seed production and to intercross the plants. This research indicated the varieties that have better growth and yield, in general, were Hapsari, Bisi and Bangkok, respectively. The Hapsari variety had a higher yield than Bangkok and Bisi varieties and had better preference in appearance, freshness, taste and flavour. In terms of seed production effort, these three varieties in general, could be done and to fulfill seeds necessary for cultivation of about 100 m2 area, required 11-16 parental plants that should be maintained in about 70 days period to produce seeds. Furthermore, intercrossing between these three varieties could be done artificially, with percentage of seed formation ranged from 45.45 to 76.47%. The highest seed formations, however, were achieved by crossing variety of Hapsari (♀) by Bangkok (♂).
