Abstract

Indonesia is estomated to have 157 species of bamboo which is more than 10% of species of bamboo in the world. Among the species of bamboo which is grown in Indonesia, 50% of them are endemic bamboo and more than 50% are bamboo species that have been exploited by the population and have highly potential to be developed. The purpose of this research is to analyze the disribution of bamboo in various environmental conditions in South Sumatra using information technology media in the form of GIS application, to study the morphological diversity of bamboo in South Sumatra, to study the economic and ecological utilization of bamboo in South Sumatra. This research uses purposive sampling method in April-July 2017 and directional interview through questionnaire to local community. From the result of this research in 5 districts was found 17 species of bamboo and the largest distribution based on environmental conditions is in conservation area (Bukit Cogong as many as 10 species and Gunung Raya Forest Reserve as many as 9 species), while in open area (land conversion area/settlement) were found only 6 species in Lahat, 2 species in MUBA, 3 species in OKI. The morphological diversity of bamboo in South Sumatra is characterized by the smaller compared to bamboo groves in conservation areas. Utilization of bamboo in South Sumatra in economic field were used for clothesline poles, fences, cattle pens, construction of houses, while in the ecological field are for hydrology of water and soil. It is necessary to do the further research on the morphological diversity of bamboo in South Sumatra and the role of people who are more concerned about the environment and the conservation of bamboo
