Abstract
In this study, the authors did the joining of 4340 and ST 36 carbon sheets of steel. The welding method used was SMAW using the Taguchi method, using the results of Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The results of the connection of dissimilar materials between AISI 4340 and ST 36 showed some welding defects such as porosity and weld distortion. This is due to the specified variable factor. Welding technique also affects the result of the joint. The most influential factor variable on AISI 4340 and ST 36 dissimilar joints with optimal conditions is the type of welding speed electrode. The setting factor level for the selected electrode is A2 (E309) with an average value of 333,693 MPa and an SNR value of 48,801 dB. The setting factor level for welding speed is D2 (4cm/min) with an average value of 353,430 MPa and an SNR value of 50,402 dB. In the HAZ region the grains produced are quite clear, as is the case with the parent metal of the two. In the weld metal area with the E309 electrode, there is a lot of porosity and few grain boundaries. The highest average tensile value was obtained in the 9th experiment, which was 433.193 MPa. With electrode type E309, current type 100 A, and welding speed 4 cm/min.
