Abstract

Mentawai Achipelago is part of Sumatra Island which has two geological conditions to plate tectonic order. First, the Indo-Australian plate plunges into the Eurasian plate. Second, there is a Sumatran fault zone which is usually called Sesar Semangko or Sumatran Fault Zone (SFZ). Located between the subduction zone and the Mentawai Achipelago fault that cause earthquake activity. This study aims to analyze the type of earthquake fault from the magnitude by using the focal mechanism method for a case of study Mentawai Achipelago earthquake 2015 – 2020 period. Focal mechanism method is a method for determining the fault plane solution due to the occurrence of an earthquake which refers to the first motion of the P wave. Fault parameters of this method include strike, dip, rake. The output of the focal mechanism is in the form of a beach ball which refers to the fault plane. In this study, creates a cross section of the earthquake that aims to determine indications of earthquake events in the tectonic plate area. Not only that, this study also validates processing results with the GFZ. From the result of the focal mechanism analysis for earthquakes with a scale magnitude ≥ 5 Mw tends to earthquake results is thrust fault/thrust oblique because it is in a subduction zone The results of the cross section indicate that the area where the earthquake occurred is a steep plate area. There is related to the result of the focal mechanism which results a thrust fault with a certain dip.
