Abstract

In recent years, short sleep duration has been proposed and received attention as a modifiable risk factor for obesity. Many observational studies on the relationship between sleep duration and obesity in children and adolescents in Asia have been conducted. This study aims to determine the relationship between short sleep duration and obesity in children and adolescents in Asia. This study uses a systematic review and meta-analysis method. Search articles using the Pubmed, Proquest, Science direct and Google Scholar databases. Article search is limited to research in English, publications from 2000 to 2020 and to free fulltext articles. The data is processed using the Revman 5.3 application. There were 12 research articles that were systematically reviewed from 1,281 identified articles. 9 of these articles were included in the meta-analysis. There is a relationship between short sleep duration and obesity in children and adolescents aged 3-18 years, pooled OR 1.4 (95% CI: 1.03-1.91). Subgroup analysis that can be done in this study is the age group 3-4 years, with pooled OR 1.43 (95% CI: 1.13-1.81) and the group 6-12 years with pooled OR 2.03 (95% CI: 1.24-3.31). Short sleep duration can increase the risk of obesity in children and adolescents. The importance of regulating sleep patterns in children and adolescents is one way to reduce the prevalence of obesity among children and adolescents and can reduce other health consequences.
