Abstract

Malocclusion can be corrected by performing orthodontic treatment using fixed or removable orthodontic appliances. Stainless steel and nickel-titanium wire are often used in orthodontic treatment, both wires can be corrode. The factor that greatly affects the occurrence of corrosion is pH. Cuka pempek is an additional sauce that served with pempek that is often consumed, it has a low pH. This study aimed to find out the different in the effect of cuka pempek and immersion time on corrosion rate of stainless steel dan nickel-titanium wire. Sixty stainless steel wires and sixty nickel-titanium wires with length of 5 cm and diameter of 0,018 inch were immersed into cuka pempek and artificial saliva. The corrosion rate was calculated using weight loss method on days 7,14 and 21. Statistical analysis using Friedman test and Dunn post hoc test. The result show the corrosion rates of wire that immersed in cuka pempek was higher than wire in artificial saliva, then the corrosion rate on stainless steel wire is higher than nickel-titanium wire, but there was no significant difference.
