Abstract

Background: Inflammation is the body's initial response to tissue damage caused by trauma, exposure to toxins, or infection. One of the herbal plants that have antiinflammatory potential is duku seeds. The purpose of this study was to determine the anti-inflammatory activity of duku seed extract gel in affecting the number of neutrophil cells in male white rats of the wistar strain induced by carrageenan. Method: In vivo study with a pretest posttest control group design was conducted at the Faculty of Medicine Sriwijaya University and Palembang Clinical Laboratory Center. Thirty rats were divided into 5 groups, namely Groups I, II, and III were given 5%, 10%, and 20% duku seed extract gel, group IV was given 0.2% hyaluronic acid gel and group V was given placebo gel. Rats were induced by 0.1 ml carrageenan solution on the labial gingival of rat's lower lip and treated with duku seed extract gel twice a day for four days and taking 2 ml of blood from the orbital sinus. The number of neutrophil cells was counted using a hematology analyzer and statistically analyzed. Result: The results showed that the the negative control group had the least difference in the average number of neutrophil cells at 0.86 x 103/μL and the largest at the 10% duku seed extract gel group was 2.26 x 103/μL. The results of paired T test and one way ANOVA showed no significant difference in all groups. Conclusion : Duku seed extract gel at concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 20% has not been shown to have significant anti-inflammatory activity in male rats of the wistar strain induced by carrageenan.
