Abstract

Background: Unilateral chewing habit is one of oral bad habits which still commonly practices by people. Unilateral chewing habit caused some negative effects such as masticatory muscle imbalance, mandibular deviation, TMJ disorder, plaque and calculus accumulation, and mandibular change. Mandibular changes diagnosis required radiograph technique which involves mandibular structure and supporting structure around the mandibular. Panoramic radiograph is an extra oral radiography method which shows a full picture of mandibular structure. This present study aims to determine the correlation between unilateral chewing habit and mandibular changes on panoramic radiograph. Method: This study was a cross sectional study. This study used 30 panoramic radiographs which met the inclusion criteria were used as subjects. This study began with collecting panoramic radiographs which matched the inclusion criteria, then distributed the questionnaire to patients. Mandibular changes analysis was done by observing the condylar head, measuring the length of condylion to gonion, and gonion to mandibular median point. Data then was analyzed using chi-square test. Result: 56,7% subjects had unilateral chewing habit. This study found that 50% subjects that have unilateral chewing habit were seen dominantly experienced mandibular change. Subjects that have unilateral chewing habit but did not experience mandibular changes was 6,7%. Chi-square test showed a p-value of 0,02 (p<0,05) which showed that there was a significant correlation between unilateral chewing habit and mandibular changes. Odds ratio value was 8,75. Conclusion: There is a correlation between unilateral chewing habit and mandibular changes. Unilateral chewing habit 8,75 times significantly increased mandibula changes risk.
