Abstract

Introduction: Worm Diseases are an infectious disease that is common in the tropics. The high prevalence of helminthiasis is caused by many people living in plantations. This is the risk factor, especially for elementary school children who often play on the ground. Objective: This study aims to analyze the deworming program and determine the factors associated with the incidence of worms in elementary school children in Kabupaten Musi Rawas. Method: This study uses mixed methods research which implement sequential explanatory design. The research was conducted in March 2021 in elementary schools (SD) in Kabupaten Musi Rawas. The population in this study were all children who are being the target of deworming program in the work region of Puskesmas Air Beliti with a target of 22,362 students. The sample in this study were some children who were targeted for deworming program in the work region of Puskesmas Air Beliti from May to July 2019 and who met the inclusion criteria. Researcher get a minimum sample of 94 childrens. Data analysis used univariate analysis, bivariate using Chi- square test, multivariate using multiple logistic regression test, as well as analysis of qualitative data. Result: There are 37 (39,4%) students which is determined as positive of worm disease. The analysis showed that hand washing habit (p-value 0.000), nail hygiene (p-value 0.007), snacking habit (p- value 0.000), defecation habit (p-value 0,08) had a significant relation with the incidence of worm diseases in elementary school children. While the wearing footwear habit (p-value 0,139) did not have a significant relation with the incidence of worm diseases in elementary school children. The variable of hand washing habits became the most dominant variable (OR: 0,24) associated with the incidence of worm disease in elementary school children. Majority of informants said that the problem during deworming program implementation in work region of Puskesmas Air Beliti is availability of mineral water and certainty of those children taking anti-helminthic drugs. Discussion: Clean and healthy living behavior needs to be emphasized to elementary school children. It should also be the responsibility of parents and teachers. Especially the habit of washing hands, keeping nails clean, choosing clean snacks, and defecate properly. In general, resource factor and process factor in deworming program can be said to be well. Keywords: Hand washing; Nails hygiene; Snacking; Defecation; Wearing footwear; Worm diseases; Anti-helminthic drugs; Mineral water. References: 56 (2004-2020)
