Abstract

Background: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) or commonly as known as mouth ulcers is the most common ulserative condition of oral cavity with burning sensation. RAS occurs around 20% of the world population. The pain frequently disturbing the patient’s activities, accordingly a herbal alternative treatment is needed that has minimal side effects. Gambier plant extract with 10% consentration are reportedly has ability to reducing the pain on minor RAS. Papaya enzyme were known to be used to maintain the physical stability of cream so it can improve the quality and extending the storage period. Objective: to determine the effect of gambir extract with papaya enzymes on the pain of minor recurrent aphthous stomatitis. Methods: This study was implicated 27 Sriwijaya University students that has minor RAS as participants were divided into 3 groups. The gambier extract ointment group with papaya enzyme, aloclair gel group, and placebo group. The subjects of each group were instructed to apply the ointment (one of them) three times daily for seven days. Subjects filled out the control sheets and RAS pain measured using the NRS score on the baseline, first day, third day, and seventh day. Results: The mean value of the third and seventh day NRS pain scores in gambier papaya extract group was smaller than the third and seventh day NRS pain scores in the aloclair group and placebo. Conclusion: application of gambier extract ointment with papaya enzyme is proven to reduce the pain on the third and seventh day caused by minor type RAS. Keywords: gambier, minor recurrent aphthous stomatitis, pain, papaya.
