Abstract

Background: Staphylococcus aureus can caused various oral infections such as angular cheilitis, dental abscess and denture stomatitis. Chlorhexidine, as an antibacterial agent, can inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus. However, the use of long term Chlorhexidine can cause various side effects such as tooth discoloration, dry mouth, and oral discomfort. Therefore, alternative therapies are needed. Natural agents can be used as an alternative therapy by using papaya seed and garlic extract combination. Objective: To determine the antibacterial effect of papaya seed and garlic extract combination against Staphylococcus aureus. Methods: A laboratory experimental study with a post-test only control group design was established. The tested groups consist of six groups, namely; negative control (aquadest), positive control (0.2% chlorhexidine), and the 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% papaya seed and garlic extract combination groups . The inhibition test was tested using the Kirby-Bauer method and the Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) test was tested using the solid dilution method. Results: 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% papaya seed and garlic extract combination could not inhibit and killing Staphylococcus aureus. Conclusion: the extract of papaya seed and garlic combination has no antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus aureus growth. Key words: antibacterial, garlic, papaya seed, Staphylococcus aureus
