Abstract

Background: Tooth extraction is a minor oral surgical procedure to remove a tooth or tooth root from its socket using a tooth extraction instrument. The act of tooth extraction will cause injury to the soft tissue and hard tissue around the extracted tooth. The use of plants as medicine for wound healing has been known since ancient times, such as the purple sweet potato. Several studies have shown that the content of flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and anthocyanins in purple sweet potatoes can increase the number of blood vessels in the wound healing process. Aim: To determine the effect of purple sweet potato extract on the number of blood vessels after tooth extraction of wistar rats. Methods: This research was true experimental with posttest only control group design. 24 male wistar rats were divided into 6 groups, namely 3 control groups and 3 treatment groups. The left mandibular incisor of the rat was extracted using a needle holder. Tooth extraction sockets were applied with gel according to the treatment group 2 times a day. Groups 1 and 4 were euthanized on the 4th day, groups 2 and 5 were euthanized on the 8th day, and groups 3 and 6 were euthanized on the 11th day, then the tissue was taken and made histological preparations. The number of blood vessels was calculated using Olympus software and analyzed statistically. Results: The average number of blood vessels in the treatment group was more than the control group (both after treatment for 3 days, 7 days, or 10 days), but statistically not significant (p>0.05). The average value of the highest number of blood vessels was owned by the purple sweet potato extract gel group for 10 days. Conclusion: Purple sweet potato extract gel had an effect in increasing the number of blood vessels after tooth extraction of wistar rats, but not statistically significant.
