Abstract

Coal in Indonesia in general has a fairly high water content on average between 30-50%. If the calorific value can be increased by utilizing certain technologies so that it can significantly reduce the amount of water content, this type of coal will be in great demand by the market because it is included in the clean coal category. One of the substances that can be added to coal is Condensate Natural Gas (CNG). CNG is the result of separation from Natural Gas which is an alternative fuel that has the potential to be utilized. The calorific value of CNG is around 10,000-12,000 calories/gram. This research was conducted using coal upgrading technology using sub-bituminous coal. The results of the analysis showed that Tanjung Enim coal and Lahat coal after upgrading process and given CNG coating, decreased moisture, decreased ash content, decreased volatile matter and increased solid carbon, increased carbon value, decreased sulfur value and increased calorific value. The results of this study indicate that Tanjung Enim coal which was given a CNG coating experienced an increase in calories from the value of 5253 cal/gr to 6291 cal/gr. Meanwhile, Lahat coal which was coated with CNG experienced an increase in calories from 5926 cal/gram to 6741 cal/gram. The increase in calories in dry coal is caused by a decrease in the moisture value, so that the solid carbon value increases. Meanwhile, the increase in calories in dry coal that has been added with CNG is due to the increase in solid carbon caused by the CNG content itself. In the CNG coating testing process, on day 8, the calorific value of Tanjung Enim coal decreased to 5872 cal/gr for laboratory scale, 5155 cal/gr for field scale. While the calorific value of Lahat coal testing is 6391 cal/gr for laboratory scale, and 5708 cal/gr for field scale. The addition of CNG to dry coal can replace diesel fuel at the initial start up of a coal boiler judged from the flash point and burning point aspects.
