Abstract

The issue of racism is one of the most complex social issues that still occur in society today. Film is one of the effective alternative media. As one of the effective alternative media, film works are able to capture and represent the social reality that exists. To find out how representations of racism are featured in Peter Farelly's Green Book, the study used a qualitative approach and a semiotic analysis of John Fiske model consisting of three levels of analysis, namely the level of reality, the level of representation, and the level of ideology. Documentation and literature studies were used in this study to obtain the data needed in this study. The results of this study show how racism that occurs having very strongly impacts on individuals or groups. Prejudices and stereotypes attached to the black race alienated the group and social inequality. The film’s synopsis is based on a true story and tells the story of how racism against blacks was committed by whites at the time. However, there will be some scenes of racism experienced by whites and even blacks as perpetrators of this action. Throughout the film the audience will be shown how racism occurs both personally and institutionally. The film also portrays the dilemma experienced by the main actor as black, who does not gain acceptance in society by both blacks and whites.
