Abstract

Abstract : The Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) is one of the large mammals owned by Indonesia and is included in the protected endangered species according to the Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia No.P.106/MENLHK/SETJRN/KUM.1/6/2018. The Padang Sugihan Wildlife Sanctuary (SM) Elephant Training Center is a conservation area that is different from the natural habitat of elephants. Research on elephant eating behavior at PLG SM Padang Sugihan is still minimal, so further research is needed that focuses on elephant eating behavior. The study used a qualitative descriptive method with ad libitum sampling technique. Observation of feeding behavior was carried out by following the elephant with the mahout to measure the percentage of feeding based on 5 observation parameters by observing the frequency or number of times the elephant pulled the feed with the trunk (TB), stepped on the feed with the foot (II), broke the feed with the foot (MI), cleaned feed with trunk (BB) and put feed into the mouth (SM) at intervals of 5 minutes for 10 hours per day at 07:00-17:00 WIB for 14 days. The objects of observation were six Sumatran elephants in PLG SM Padang Sugihan, namely: one dominant male elephant (Tulus, 27 years old), one dominant female elephant (Lina, 25 years old), one sub dominant male elephant (Gani, 19 years old). , one sub-dominant female elephant (Elsa, 22 years), one male elephant calf (Felice, 5 years), and one female elephant calf (Sabil, 2 years). The results showed that the eating behavior of the Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumateranus) at the Elephant Training Center SM Padang Sugihan led to 3 repeated feeding activities, namely pulling feed with the trunk (TB), cleaning feed with trunk (BB), and putting food into the mouth (SM). ) with the highest average frequency of feeding behavior owned by dominant male elephants as much as 5750 times and the smallest being owned by female elephants with 1016 times. The percentage of eating behavior of Sumatran elephants at the Padang Sugihan SM Elephant Training Center is influenced by differences in age, body size, sex and grazing habitat conditions. Keywords: elephant, Sumatra, eating behavior, elephant training center.
