Abstract

Pleural effusion is a condition of accumulation of fluid in the pleural cavity due to impaired circulation of pleural fluid. This condition causes respiratory problems in the patient, so the treatment that can be given is to maintain the body's oxygen needs. The purpose of this study is to apply comprehensive nursing care, especially in patients with pleural effusion. The method used in this study is a qualitative research method with a case study approach in three patients with pleural effusion. The results showed that the three patients had the main complaints, namely shortness of breath, increased respiratory rate, there was accessory muscle movement of breath, prolonged expiration phase, body felt weak, complained of fatigue, and increased heart rate at rest. Nursing problems that occur in all patients are ineffective breathing patterns and activity intolerance. Thus, interventions that can be implemented are by performing airway management such as providing oxygenation, providing a semi-Fowler position, deep breathing exercises, and providing a tripod/lean forward (CKD) position. This has been proven in several studies and has been shown to affect alleviating respiratory complaints in patients. The conclusion of this study is the management of pleural effusion through airway management by providing oxygenation assistance, providing a semi-Fowler position or a tripod position which is expected to reduce respiratory complaints, so that oxygen needs are still met.
