Abstract

Seaweed in Indonesia has potential as an antioxidant. One of the seaweeds that have potential is Eucheuma cottonii. Eucheuma cottonii seaweed is one type of seaweed that has the ability to inhibit free radicals. The purpose of this study was to analyze the antioxidant potential and determine the total phenolic compounds content of Eucheuma cottonii seaweed. This research was conducted in April 2021. Eucheuma cottonii seaweed samples were taken from Ketapang Waters, Lampung. The methods used include sampling and handling, measurement of water quality, extraction, antioxidant activity test, and determination of total phenolic content. Water quality Ketapang has a suitable environment for the growth of Eucheuma cottonii seaweed. Extraction and maceration were carried out using three solvents, namely n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol. Eucheuma cottonii seaweed sample extract in n-hexane solvent has a weak category of antioxidant potential with an IC50 value (287587.50 μg/mL), ethyl acetate solvent has a weak antioxidant potential with an IC50 value (948.83 μg/mL), and Methanol solvent has strong antioxidant potential with IC50 value (14.01 μg/mL). The total content of phenolic compounds in the sample extract of E. cottonii in n-hexane solvent was 2.5012 mg GAE/g, ethyl acetate was 4.41202 mg GAE/g, and methanol 0.5747 mg GAE/g.
