Abstract

Background: Candida albicans is a part of normal flora of the oral cavity and the main etiology of oral candidiasis. Currently, natural substance can be used as an alternative for antifungal agent. Catfish meats have been reported to contain amino acids and fatty acids which have antifungal activity. Objectives: To determine the antifungal activity of catfish (Pangasius sp.) meat extract against C. albicans. Methods: This study was an in vitro laboratory experimental with post-test only control group design. Catfish meat extract is obtained through maceration process using 96% ethanol. The catfish meat extract were tested at concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75%, 100% to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the zone of inhibition using broth dilution method and disc diffusion (Kirby Bauer) method. The antifungal agent nystatin was used as a positive control. Results: The result of the mic test showed that turbidity was noticed in all concentrations of catfish meat extract and no inhibition zone in all concentrations of catfish meat extract. The antifungal activity was only shown in the positive control (nystatin). Conclusion: Catfish meat extract with concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% did not have antifungal activity against C. albicans. Keywords: antifungal, Candida albicans, catfish (Pangasius sp.)
