Abstract

Macrozoobenthos are animals that partly or all of their life cycle is on the bottom of the water or sediment. The environmental quality of river waters can be seen from the diversity of macrozoobenthos as a water bioindicator. Ogan River is the main flowing river in Ogan Komering Ulu Regency area. The upstream area of Ogan River in the highlands is supposed owning a more diverse microhabitat than the downstream, and has a higher diversity of macrozoobenthos. The purpose of this study was to analyze the structure of the macrozoobenthos community, measure the quality of river waters in terms of macrozoobenthos indicators and determine water quality categories based on the Family Biotic Index (FBI) in the waters of Ogan River upstream of Baturaja, Semidang Aji District, OKU Regency, South Sumatra. Determination of research stations was done by purposive sampling method that was based on the consideration of the area that represents the research location. 5 (five) stations were taken from a predetermined location, where at each stations there were 5 (five) sampling points selected based on the type of micro-habitat that was composited, namely rocky, gravel, sandy, littered, and vegetated substrates. The results showed that there were 5 classes, 11 orders, 29 families, and 34 macrozoobenthos genera in Ogan River upstream of Baturaja, Semidang Aji sub-district. The FBI index value ranged from 4.0 to 4.7, the average density was 634-1523 ind./m2, the diversity ranged from 2.0 to 2.7, the dominance ranged from 0.03 to 0.2, and the similarity of macrozoobenthos was relatively the same with little organic pollution. Based on the structure of the macrozoobenthos community in the upstream Ogan River, it can be concluded that Ogan River upstream of Baturaja, Semidang Aji District is still relatively good.
