Abstract

Turning is a machining process that uses a chisel with one cutting edge to remove material from the surface of a rotating workpiece. The turning process uses a Jhung Metal Machinery Co JII 530x1100 lathe in the Production workshop at the Vocational Training Center (BLK) and uses a carbide chisel with low carbon steel as well as variations in cutting speed and infeed depth from the turning process. This turning process is often found in industrial production processes. The machining process using a cutting chisel is an important method to remove parts that are not needed to form the material according to the desired conditions in the production of the machining process. Several types of chisels are often used in the manufacturing industry, one of which is the carbide chisel. Carbide tools have been widely used in the metal manufacturing industry, although they have become the best alternative for metal machining processes. When machining using carbide tools with conventional machining methods, wear on the surface of the ribs and craters is the main cause of tool failure. Chisel is one of the cutting tools that plays an important role in the manufacturing industry, especially in the process of making a machine tool/component. During the machining process, the tool will wear out. Wear on the tool will affect the dimensional accuracy, geometry and surface roughness of the workpiece in the process. Tool wear is caused by the tool bit reaching its limit. Tool wear will increase when cutting speed is reduced. Likewise, with feed depth, tool wear increases as feed depth decreases. Tool wear will decrease or wear out more rapidly as the feed depth increases under the machining conditions whose value variations were observed in this test (cutting speed and feed depth). Based on the data from the test results carried out for 19 repetitions with a machining length of 1900 mm, that the highest wear value in this study was found in the variables with Vc = 161.1m/min, F = 0.044 mm/put, and a = 1 mm from 0, 2067, with a machining time of 32,38 minutes. While the lowest tool wear value in this study was found in the test variable with Vc = 77.56 m/min, F = 0.44 mm/put, and a = 0.6 mm at 0.1307, with a machining time of 66,43 minutes. . In the lathe machining process, the most common type of tool wear is edge wear. . Keywords: Turning Process, Carbide, Tool Wear, Low Carbon Steel.
