Abstract

This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between self-esteem and body image on female adolescent who experiences body shaming. The hyphothesis of this study is there is a relationship between self-esteem and body image on female adolescent in Palembang City who experiences body shaming. This research was conducted by involving 155 female adolescents aged 18-22 years old that lives in Palembang who had experienced body shaming. Sampling is done by using purposive sampling technique. The study measurements are body image scale that refer to the measurement factors from Cash (2015) and self-esteem scale that refer to the aspects from Coopersmith (1967). Hyphothesis testing is done by using correlation pearson product moment. The result of correlation shows the coefficient value of appearance (r= 0,178 with p= 0,026) and body area satisfaction (r= -0,274 with p= 0,001) p<0,05). This means that there is significant relationship between self-esteem and appearance evaluation and body area satisfaction. Whereas in appearance orientation (r= 0,083 with p= 0,306), overweight preoccupation (r= 0,037 with p= 0,644), and self-classified weight (r= 0,103 with p= 0,203). That means that there is no significant relationship between self-esteem and appearance orientation, overweight preoccupation, and self-classified weight. Thus, only the few of the hyphothesis proposed in this study is accepted.
