Abstract

Background: Peripheral artery disease is defined as a condition of impaired blood flow caused by a narrowing (stenosis) and an obstruction (occlusion) of blood vessels due to the buildup of atherosclerotic plaques under the layers of blood vessel walls, which may affect the upper and lower extremities. It is generally caused by atherosclerosis, which has risk factors such as age, gender, smoking habits, hypertension, diabetes mellitus (DM), obesity, histories of cardiovascular and chronic kidney diseases. This research was intended to evaluate the description of risk factors for peripheral artery disease in PAD patients at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Central General Hospital of Palembang. Method: This research was classified as descriptive observational research with a cross sectional design. This research data were derived from retrospective data in the form of patient medical records. Samples of this research were composed of medical records of patients with peripheral artery disease at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Central General Hospital of Palembang, in the period of January 2019 – August 2021. The samples were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria by means of total sampling technique. Result: 37 Peripheral Artery Disease patients were successfully determined as research subjects, with a mean age of 60 years and an equal sex ratio between men and women. Most of the subjects had histories of hypertension and cardiovascular diseases (56.8%), and had a history of type 2 diabetes (43.2%). Moreover, some of them were active smokers (29.7%), and had a history of chronic kidney disease (2.7%), and no obese patients were identified in this research. Conclusion: Risk factors for PAD consist of elderly age, smoking habits, stage 1 hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular history, and normal nutritional status.
