Abstract

Background: Obstetric bleeding is the highest cause in contributing to maternal mortality and one of the causes of obstetric bleeding is placenta previa. Placenta previa is a condition where the placenta implants in the lower uterine segment so that it covers all or part of the internal cervical os. The purpose of the study was to determine the characteristics of maternal and perinatal outcomes of mothers giving birth with placenta previa at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin 2019-2020. Methods: This research is quantitative with descriptive observational design using secondary data from medical records of Dr. RSUP. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Results: In 119 mothers studied, data showed that 51.3% of mothers were at risk, 65.5% of mothers with multipara, 54.6% of mothers had a history of uterine surgery, and 72.3% of mothers were given antenatal corticosteroids. On the maternal outcome, it was found that 96.6% of mothers gave birth by cesarean section, 57.1% of mothers with antepartum anemia, 72.3% of mothers with postpartum, 25.2% of mothers with postpartum hemorrhage, 4.2% of mothers with hypovolemic shock in grade IV, and 0.8% of mothers had maternal deaths. On the perinatal outcome of 121 infants born, it was found that 59.5% of infants were born prematurely, 52.1% of infants with low birth weight, 18.2% of infants with asphyxia neonatorum, 16.5% of infants with RDS, and 10.7% of infants with perinatal death. Conclusion: Placenta previa can cause potentially life-threatening complications in the mother and neonate.
