Abstract

Background: Anemia during gestation and delivery is a global problem for mothers and babies. Riskesdas data shows the prevalence of anemia in pregnant women in Indonesia in 2018 reached 48.9%. Iron deficiency accounts for about 75% of cases of non-physiological anemia in pregnancy. Maternal characteristics such as age, education, parity, pregnancy spacing, multiple gestation, frequency of antenatal care, and body mass index associated with anemia during pregnancy. This study describes the relationship between maternal characteristics and iron deficiency anemia in women giving birth at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang in 2020. Methods: This type of research is an analytic observational study with a design cross-sectional. The data used is secondary data in the Medical Record Installation of Dr. RSUP. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. The sample of this study were mothers who had iron deficiency anemia and did not have iron deficiency anemia that fulfills the inclusion criteria at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang in 2020. Results: The results of this study obtained 105 mothers giving birth, with 56 people (53.3%) experiencing iron deficiency anemia. The results of the analysis using the Chi-square test showed that there was a significant relationship between parity (p = 0.035), gestational interval (p = 0.034), multiple pregnancies (p = 0.035), and frequency of antenatal care (p = 0.007) with iron deficiency anemia in maternal childbirth. Meanwhile, there was no significant relationship between age (p=0.818), education (p=0.721), and body mass index (p=0.222) with iron deficiency anemia in maternal childbirth. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between parity, gestational spacing, multiple gestation, and frequency of antenatal care with iron deficiency anemia in maternal childbirth. There is no significant relationship between age, education, and body mass index with iron deficiency anemia in maternal childbirth.
