Abstract

Background. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a disturbance of brain function and/or structure due to external physical forces that can produce signs and symptoms of brain dysfunction in the period of acute injury. TBI is one of the leading causes of death and disability. Incidence of head injury can occur due to several risk factors such as age and gender related to the cause of the head injury itself such as traffic accidents, falls, or other causes. TBI cases also continue to increase both in Indonesia and the world every year. This study aims to determine the characteristics of traumatic brain injury patients at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang in 2018-2020 based on sociodemographic, clinical, and risk factors. Method. This research is an observational descriptive study. The data used in this study is secondary data sourced from medical records of traumatic brain injury patients at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang who has met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results. From this study, patients with TBI at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang in 2018-2020 had the highest distribution in the 19-59 year old group (46.4%) and male gender (76.3%), the most common cause was traffic accidents (47.8%), with the highest degree of severity was mild TBI (59.3%), and intracranial epidural hematoma lesions (44.4%). Conclusion. Head injury patient at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang in 2018-2020 based on age the most were adults (19-59 years) and male sex. Based on the causes of head injuries, the most common causes of head injuries were traffic accidents. The majority of head injury patients had minor head injuries (GCS 14-15). Epidural hematoma lesions are the most common type of lesion.
