Abstract

The present study was aimed to determine iodine concentration in the leaves of Kangkung (Ipomea reptan poir) and spinach (Amaranthus sp) grown in solution culture and its effect on plant growth. This research was conducted from November 2018 to February 2019 at the hydroponic shade house, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was the design used in this research, with 4 treatments that were replicated 4 times. All data or results were subjected to One Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), with a level of significance of p < 0.05. The treatments were T0 (control / 0 ppm KI), T1 (25 ppm KI), T2 (50 ppm KI), T3 (75 ppm KI), which therefore comprises of 16 experimental units. The method used to determine iodine was Test-kit method, a semi-quantitative method. The result shows that the uptake of iodine by the vegetable plants increases with the increasing amount of iodine supplementation, for instance, at T1 (25 ppm) the iodine content was between the range of 7-15 ppm while for T2 (50 ppm) and T3 (75 ppm) the iodine content was between the range of 20-27 ppm, which proof that increase iodine in soilless culture increases iodine content in vegetables leaves. Thus for this research, in general, the best Iodine treatment was T1 (25 ppm) for spinach plants, however, kangkung plant grew well on T2 (50 ppm) and T3 (75 ppm) treatment despite showing some necrosis symptoms towards the end of the experiment.
