Abstract

Background: Laryngeal carcinoma is a form of squamous cell malignancy originating from the larynx. Laryngeal carcinoma is the second most frequent malignancy in head and neck cancer after lips and oral cavity carcinoma. The most important risk factors for the development of laryngeal carcinoma are smoking and alcohol consumption. The aims of this research is to determine the prevalence of laryngeal carcinoma in ORL-HNS Department of RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Methods: This research was a descriptive observational study with cross-sectional design, using secondary data from the medical records of laryngeal carcinoma patients at the ORL-HNS Department of RSUP Dr. Moh. Hoesin Palembang within period 2018-2020 which was taken by total sampling technique. The results are presented in the form of tabular and narrative. Results: The prevalence of laryngeal carcinoma was 11.93% obtained from 193 cases of laryngeal carcinoma from 1,617 cases of head and neck cancer in the ORL-HNS Department of RSUP Dr. Moh. Hoesin Palembang within period 2018-2020. A total of 70 medical records suited the inclusion criteria in this study, with 91.4% of patients were male; 32.9% of patients were in the age group of 59-65 years; 42.9% of patients had smoking habit; 75.7% of patients experienced hoarseness as the first symptoms; 52.9% of patients had glottis tumor; 52.9% of patients were diagnosed at stage IV; 62.9% of patients had a well-differentiated ceratinizing histopathological type; 51.4% of patients received chemotherapy. Conclusion: Laryngeal carcinoma was mostly suffered by men in the age group of 59-65 years, had smoking habit, with the first symptoms of hoarseness, tumor was located in the glottis, and well-differentiated ceratinizing histopathological type.
