Abstract

Background: Drowning is the causes of death caused by the inhalation of water into the respiratory tract. According to WHO (2019), deaths due to drowning accounted for 7% of all deaths due to injuries in the world, while according to data compiled by BASARNAS (2018) the incidence of drowning reached 514 cases with 289 victims of whom died. Increased access to water is a risk factor for drowning. South Sumatra is an area surrounded by the waters of the Musi River, making it a risk factor for drowning. This study aims to determine the clinical and sociodemographic characteristics of bodies in drowning cases based on the results of visum et repertum at Bhayangkara Hospital Palembang. Methods: The research method used was a descriptive observational using secondary data obtained from visum et repertum of drowning bodies recorded at Bhayangkara Hospital Palembang for the period January 2018—December 2020. Results: The results of this study obtained 17 cases out of a total of 263 cases (6.46%). Based on the characteristics of the cases, it was found that they were male, adolescent and adult age groups, and Palembang. The external examination findings were washer woman's hand, froth or foam, cyanosis, cadaveric spasm, maceration, petechiae, discoloration, edema, cutis anserine, and adipocere. Also for Internal examination findings in froth and foam, food residue in the stomach, mud and sand in the respiratory tract, and woody twigs in the gastrointestinal tract. Conclusion: The most common clinical and sociodemographic characteristics of drowned bodies in Bhayangkara Hospital Palembang were washer woman's hand (19.5%), froth and foam (50%), Palembang City (64.7%), male (94.1%), and adolescent and adult age groups respectively (41.2%).
