Abstract

Background: Eating process of children is not only to fulfill their satiation but also to sufficient nutrition needs. Eating problems could interrupt their health, including oral and dental health. Poor Oral and dental health could affect their confidence, chewing ability, and nutrition supply. Early Childhood Caries (ECC) is dental disease that affects hard tissue of primary dentitions and it’s the most common dental disease of children. Prevalence of ECC in Palembang is 92,4%. The risk of dental caries is necessary to investigate to predict the new caries incidence based on children eating behavior. Aim: the aim of this study is to establish Predictioin Model of Caries Risk Based on Eating Behavior of Toddler in Palembang City. Method: an explanatory sequential mixed methods study was conducted, first to assess eating behaviour of children by Childrean Eating Behavior (CEBQ)in quantitative study. Then, perception and beliefs of mothers regarding eating behavior of children were explored in qualitative study. A logistic regression analysis was done for quantitative data, and inductive applied thematic analysis for qualitative data. The findings of the quantitative and qualitative parts of study were mixed at the interpretation level. Sampling was conducted with purposive sampling and total sample is 165 children between 3-5 years old with their mother. Result: ECC prevalence is 47,9%. This study found that Food Responsiveness (p- value 0,001; OR = 3.235 ; 95% CI 1,648-6,341) , Food Fussiness (p-value 0,010; OR = 2,380; 95% CI 1,273-4,450) and Enjoyment of Food (p-value 0,005; OR = 0,377; 95% CI 0,198-0,72) were significantly associated with ECC. Conclusion: Eating behaviour contribute on development of ECC. Keywords : eating behavior, Early Childhood Caries (ECC), CEBQ
