Abstract

One of the eye health problems in the community is cataracts, which is a opacification of the eye lens that causes blurred vision. The current treatment of choice for cataracts is surgery. However, the possibility of complications can still occur in each cataract surgery technique. This study aims to determine the prevalence of postoperative complications of cataracts with ECCE and phacoemulsification techniques which are the most experienced by cataract patients. This research is an observational descriptive study with a retrospective approach that was carried out at the end of November 2021 to mid-December 2021. The subjects of this study were cataract patients at the Community Eye Special Hospital of South Sumatra Province in 2018-2020. The research data is in the form of medical record data at the medical record installation with a total of 400 data taken using proportional random sampling technique. This study found that the prevalence of the most common types of cataracts was senile (99%) and the rest were juvenile (0.75%) and congenital (0.25). The youngest age of the patient who underwent cataract surgery was 0.4 years (4 months) and the oldest age was 95 years, the mean age of the patient was 61.92 ± SD 11.72 years, most of whom were female (53.75%). The prevalence of complications after cataract surgery mostly occurs using ECCE surgery technique (48.5%). the prevalence of post-cataract complications that most commonly found was corneal edema, using the ECCE technique by 35% and phacoemulsification by 32.5%. The highest prevalence of cataract type is senile cataract, the sex is mostly female, postoperative cataract surgery complications are common in the ECCE technique, and the most common type of complication using either ECCE or phacoemulsification techniques is corneal edema.
