Abstract

The location of study area was in Kesambirata Region, Ogan Komering Ulu, South Sumatera Province which was geographically located at coordinates S 09.5” E 103 49’ 13.4” and S 4 03’ 56.9” E 103 52’ 59.8” with an area of 49 km and an observation scale of 1: 25,000. This research aims to analyze the geological conditions including geomorphology, stratigraphy, and geological structure and describe and determine the characteristics of tuffs so it can be shows the volcanism based on petrography. The methods of this study are field and analysis (laboratories and studio work). The study area has four landform units based on the classification of Widyatmanti et al. (2016) namely the Denudational Hills of Slightly Steep to Very Steep Slopes, Sloping Denudational Hills to Slightly Steep Slopes, Denudational Low Hills of the Slope, Denudational Hills of Slope to Very Steep. Stratigraphy of study area consisted of the Gumai Formation (as an older Formation) with shale stone as lithology aged Early Miocene - Late Miocene. Stratigraphy of study area consisted of the Gumai Formation (as an older Formation) with shale stone as lithology aged Early Miocene - Late Miocene. Based on paleontological analysis, the micro fossils show the depositional and bathymetry environment in the Edge to Middle Neritic. Whereas the Quaternary Formation (young Formation) is deposited unconformable above the Gumai Formation and has several lithology such as tuff and andesite breccia aged Late Pliocene - Pleistocene. The geological structure that developed in the study area is Anticline Surau and Surau Fracture. Based on the results of kinematic analysis, the structure has a N - S relative direction. The geological history begins with the deposition of the Gumai Formation in the Middle Miocene - End of the South Sumatra Basin transgression phase. After the sediment was deposited compression occurred and a fold was formed namely Non Plunging Steeply Inclined Fold. Then there was a hiatus and in the Quaternary Period, volcanic activity occurred and deposited tuffs and andesitic breccia at the research area were interpreted to come from two different sources of Volcanoes with quite wide distribution. The research area is dominated by products from the Quaternary Formation with tuff which the distributed to two regions based on eruption sources. They are Tuff Bukit Nanti and Tuff Isau-Isau. This study will focused on Tuff-Isau-Isau because it’s have some characteristic which different characteristics such as the presence of glass fragments which have deformation, some of the minerals that have been altered, and the other textures such as embayment on some minerals and pumice also secondary sedimentation or devitrification. Based on physical characteristics, petrology, and similarities in composition, sediment structure and distribution and thickness, then a facies model is created to show the process of tuff deposits which founded five facies off tuff that shows it made by different process and it seems by the mineral composition, physical condition and sediment structure. Keywords: Quaternary Formation, Tuff, tuff facies.
