Abstract

Background: Low back pain (LBP) disability is a condition where the ability to carry out activities is reduced in a way or within the normal range due to pain in the lower back. Most of the LBP disabilities are at working age along with the increasing risk factors for LBP in the work environment. This study aims to analyze the relationship between sitting posture, prolonged sitting, physical activity, and mental health with the levels of low back disability among employees of the Palembang City Department of Communication and Informatic. Methods: In this study, a cross-sectional observational analytic design was applied. The samples of this study were 87 employees who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Sitting posture was recorded then analyzed using Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) to obtain data of sitting posture. Data of subjects characteristics were obtained through semi-structured interviews. Pain intensity, physical activity, and mental health of the subjects were obtained through self-administered questionnaires. The data were analyzed using Chi-square test or Fisher Exact test, followed by logistic regresion test using SPSS. Results: The prevalence of LBP is 59.6%. There was 61.5% of the LBP subjects experienced mild disability while another 38.5% experienced moderate disability. The bivariate analysis showed significant results between LBP disability with age (p=0.017), sitting posture (p=0,022), physical activity (p=0.003), and mental health (p=0.001). The risk factor that most influenced LBP disability was mental health (p=0,044; OR=6,350). Conclusion: The risk factors that have a significant relationship with LBP disability among employees of Communication and Informatic Department of Palembang City are age, sitting posture, physical activity, and mental health. Key words: Low back pain disability, risk factors
