Abstract

Lightning Counter is an additional device that plays an important role in the lightning protection system, serving as a benchmark for the effectiveness of the lightning protection system that has been installed by recording every time a lightning strike occurs at the tip of the lightning rod. This research aims to design and create a monitoring tool for lightning protection systems that can be monitored in real time, as well as to show out information from lightning strikes in the form of time, date, number of times the lightning protection tool has worked and the magnitude of lightning strike that occur. Which can be used as a reference in conducting inspections, as well as improvements, and repairment for lightning protection system if needed. The results of this study is in the form of lightning protection monitoring tools that has been successfully to show time, date, number of times the lightning protection tool has worked, and also the magnitude of the electric current from lightning strikes in real time, based on the ESP8266. This test uses simulation with using a voltage source connected to a switch with a load of 10 ohms. The data obtained from the test shows an average error of 4.8%, the resulting error could be affected by the level of precision of the sensor. Thus it can be concluded that this lightning protection monitoring tool managed to read the passing current that is assumed to be a lightning strike.
