Abstract

Banana (Musa paradisiaca) is a plant widely cultivated included in Indonesia. Bananas are popular because of their sweet fruit and also has many benefits. However, in the cultivation of bananas, there are obstacles both due to pests and disease. One of the diseases is known as Banana Bunchy Top Virus. This dwarf disease is transmitted by a vector named Pentalonia nigronervosa. These aphid transmit the virus from infected banana to healthy banana plants through their piercing mouthparts, sucking in and leaving the virus inside the plant. In the vicinity of banana plants, many plants from families Araceae and Zingiberaceae are found, these plant can be alternative hosts for P. nigronervosa. The purpose of this study was to determine the biology of P. nigronervosa on Curcuma xanthorriza and determine the efficiency of BBTV transmission by P. nigronervosa after being passed on to curcuma plants. The research was conducted is in Bahri Umar room and in the experimentyal garden of Department of Plant Pests and Diseases, Plant Protection Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University from July to December 2021. The experiment was arranged in a Randomized Block Design (RBD) with 4 treatments and 5 replications. The results showed that P. nigronervosa was able to grow and develop on Curcuma plant and produced 9 to 33 individuals with an average of 24.1 individuals.The results of the research in the field showed that the infection of BBTV by P. nigronervosa passed on Javanese ginger was not significantly different from those transmitteddirectly by P. nigronervosa plants, means that curcuma plant could not reduce the efficiency of BBTV transmission by P. nigtonervosa.
