Abstract

In a row with the planning for developing oil palm plantation in peat land, firstly evaluation of land suitability in the area should be provided to ensure prospective development of oil palm. The aim of this research was to asses suitability of peat land for oil palm in Pedamaran Sub-district, Ogan Komering Ilir District. Soil samples was analyzed in soil Science Laboratory of Agricultural Faculty, Sriwijaya University. Field activity and soil analysis was carried out in September and October 2006.This research was carried by using reconnainssance survey method at 1 : 200.000 scale covering area about 2,000 ha. From this area eight soil samples were collected. Soil characteristics of site observation are determined by slope, permanent water-logging, peat thickness, and soil chemistry consisting of soil pH, CEC, total Nitrogen, available P and K. Matching land characteristic and crop requirement for oil palm results the actual soil suitability for this crop. By taking into consideration the amount of input based on existing limiting factors, potential suitability can be determinated. The research location hadan average annual rainfall of 2189 mm/year with average temperature of 27° C. This rainfall and temperature is highly suitable (SI) foroil P®1"1- ^ land fann of studY area is flat whase slope sleepness is < 2 % such flat area is highly suitable (SI) for oil palm.Because of water-logging, the study area actually was not suitable (N) for oil palm, while soii pH is marginally suitable (S3) for every sampling site. Total Nitrogenin site 5 (0,20 %) was moderatelly suitable (S2). Peat thickness was moderatellysuitable (S2) for site 1,2, and 5; while marginally suitable (S3) for site 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8.Having considered all inputs needed to over come the limiting factors (soilacidity and drainage), site observation 1, 2, and 5 are potentially moderatelly suitable(S2) for oil palm which is still restricted by peat thickness (r), hor the other sites (3, 4, 6, 7 and 8) are marginally suitable (S3) for this crop.
