Abstract

Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a polyphagous pest originating from the United States and entering Indonesia in 2019, attacking corn plants by destroying the growing point of the plant so that the plant is damaged and even dies resulting in a loss of 50-80% of corn production. . This study aimed to determine the effect of four species of sweet potato and corn on the biology of S. frugiperda. This research was carried out by rearing S. frugiperda larvae from the egg phase which was designed using a randomized block design with four treatments and one control which was repeated three times. With host plants purple sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L) Lam. cv. Antin 3), orange sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L) Lam. cv. Beta 1), yellow sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L) Lam. cv. Beta 2), white sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L) Lam. cv. Papua solossa, and maize (Zea mays L.). Each replication was carried out rearing of S. frugiperda larvae from a collection of eggs that hatched to become imago. This observation was carried out every day by observing the life cycle of S. frugiperda from the egg phase until imago. The results of this study that S. frugiperda fed sweet potato and corn had varied developments. S. frugiperda fed sweet potato developed slower than corn. Larvae fed sweet potatoes experienced better growth than maize. The highest larval mortality was found in purple sweet potatoes. The highest percentage of larvae pupae and imago emergence was found in corn. The highest number of eggs laid and the percentage of eggs hatched was in corn while imago sweet potato did not produce eggs. The conclusion of this study is that S. frugiperda is a polyphagous pest. Larvae fed sweet potato resulted in better growth in the larval stage, whereas in maize it resulted in better development in the life cycle. The highest larval mortality was found in purple sweet potatoes and the number of eggs laid by imago on sweet potatoes did not produce eggs.
