Abstract

Banana is a plant originating from Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific islands that can grow well in the surrounding environment. However, in recent years is production has decreased due to Banana Bunchy Top Disease (BBTD). This disease is caused by Banana Bunchy Top Virus (BBTV) transmited by banana aphid Pentalonia nigronervosa. Based on these problems, a study was carried out which aims to determine the biology of P. nigronervosa on galangal plants and the effect of galangal on gthe efficiency of BBTV transmission. The research was conducted in the Insectarium and research garden of the Department of Plant Pests and Diseases, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. The time of conducting the research starts from June to December 2021. The workings of this study were carried out in two stages, namely observing the biology of P. nigronervosa on galangal plants and the second stage was the infestation of infective P. nigronervosa passed on galangal for determined times before being infested into healthy banana for BBTV transmission. The experiment was arranged in arandomised block design with 4 treatments and 5 replications. The results of the biological test of Pentalonia nigronervosa showed that P. nigronervosa ia able to grow and developed on galangal plants withaverage fecundity 57 per female aphid with avarege rfeproductive time 29 days. The gtransmission experiment showed that galangal could not reducer the efficiency of transmission BBTV by P. nigronervosa.
