Abstract
Coolant has a special function in the machining process, one of which is able to determine the roughness value of the cutting process. Vegetable oil is an alternative refrigerant which has almost the same properties as the manufacturer's coolant. This study aims to find the right formula of vegetable oil and water as a coolant in the turning process. The cooling variations used in this study were vegetable oil without additives, water without additives, vegetable oil and water 1:2, vegetable oil and water 1:1. From the results of the study, it was found that the formula of vegetable oil and water 1:1 resulted in the best roughness value of 3.648 m. In comparison, a certain amount of coolant will improve the quality of the lathe product. The conclusion of this study is that the vegetable oil cooler produces a roughness of 12.30 m, the water cooler has a surface roughness value of 4.297 m, the vegetable oil and water cooler 1:2 is 3.727 m, the vegetable oil and water cooler has the best surface roughness of 1:1. which is 3.648 m and the effect of the ratio of water in mixing the cooling media has an effect, the more the ratio of water, the level of surface roughness produced will also be greater and vice versa.
