Abstract

Army worm S. litura is one of polyphagous insects infesting various vegetables causing significant yield losses. One of alternative measures to control S. litura is by using bi-insecticide based on B. thuringiensis active ingredient cultured in agricultural byproduct ie. Rice bran, rice washing water, tofu byproduct and bio-urine. The addition of surfactant NP10 in to bioinsecticide may help the spread of the insecticide over the plant. The objectives of this research was to know the effect of several organic wastes on the growth of B. thuringiensis and on the mortality of treated insects. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design (RBD) with 2 factors, the first factor was surfactant (2 types) and the second factor was bio-insecticide grown in several organic wastes. The bacterial isolates used were from the collection of Entomological Laboratory Department of Plant Pest and Disease refitted in NGKG media. Rice bran, rice washing water, tofu byproduct and bio-urine and nutrient broth (NB). were used to produce B. thuringiensis. The bio-insecticide was applied by dipping leaves for 2 minutes into its solution in the petri dish with and without 2% of surfactant. Three second instar of S. litura were used for each repetition. The highest spore density was found in the solution after being homogenized for 72 hours. The symptoms showed by infected larvae were inactive, less appetite, followed by softening of the body and leaking milky liquid. There were significant difference of mortality, larval size, and leaf consumed between treatments of using and not using surfactant. The dead larvae showed softened bodies, smell, crinkle, and darkened, and if the infected larvae able to form pupae, the pupae were black and no response to touch. Room temperature and humidity in were 27.530C and 72.33% respectively.
