Abstract

Spodoptera frugiperda is the main pest of maize which is polyphagous and is reported to have more than 350 hosts. This pest can also spread quickly because it has a high migratory ability so that if not controlled, S. frugiperda can reduce corn yields by 8.3 to 20.6 million tons per year from a total production of 39 million tons per year. S. frugiperda attacks can be exacerbated in the absence of natural enemies. Spiders are one of the main predators in controlling pest populations. Information about spiders and their potential as natural enemies in regulating the larval population of S. frugiperda in South Sumatra is still unknown. For this reason, it is necessary to conduct this study in order to obtain information about spider species and their potential in regulating the population of S. frugiperda larvae by evaluating using functional responses. This research was conducted at the Entomology Laboratory of the Department of Pests and Plant Diseases, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University and was carried out from February to December 2021. This study used a factorial randomized block design with 2 factors and 10 replications in each prey instar. The first factor was the exposure of prey to different densities of different spider species, namely Runcinia albostriata (Araneae: Thomisidae), Oxyopes macilentus (Araneae: Oxyopidae), and Pardosa pseudoannulata (Araneae: Lycosidae). The second factor was the exposure of prey to spiders with different prey densities, namely 10, 20, 40, 80, and 160 individuals. The data obtained from the observations were analyzed by means of a variance test and continued with the BNJ test at a level of 5%. The two spider species, R. albostriata and O. macilentus, were classified as type I functionally responsive, while P. pseudoannulata was classified as type III at the 1st instar exposure of S. frugiperda with densities of 10, 20, 40, 80 and 160. On instar exposure to-3 has a type III functional response. Observations also showed that Pardosa pseudoannulata had the highest ability to prey on the 1st instar. The highest preying ability occurs at high prey density so that the difference in prey density affects the prey ability. The speed of attack occurs at medium densities, this explains that spiders are predators that are easily saturated. Oxyopes macilentus has the highest ability to prey on the 3rd instar although this ability decreases with increasing prey density. The results also showed that R. albostriata was a spider species that was ineffective in controlling the population of S. frugiperda larvae. This is supported by its characteristic that R. albostriata is a spider that is passive and annoys prey approaching. The conclusions are that P. pseudoannulata is a spider that is quite effective in controlling the 1st instar population of S. frugiperda, while O. macilentus is a spider that can prey on the 3rd instar of S. frugiperda although in low numbers.
