Abstract

The research objective was to determine the relationship between optimism and subjective well-being in unemployed young adults. There were 3 hyphothesis’ in this study : there is a relationship between optimism and: (1) pleasant affect; (2) unpleasant affect; (3) life satisfaction on unemployed young adults. The participants of this study were unemployed young adults in Indonesia. Sampling in this study using purposive sampling technique. Subjective well-being scale refers to components of subjective well-being from Diener, Suh, Lucas, and Smith (1999). To measure optimism using a optimism scale that refers to dimensions of Seligman (2008). Statistical analysis completed by using pearson product moment correlation. The results of the correlation analysis between optimism and pleasant affect showed that the p-value = 0,000 (p<0,05) and r = 0,516, which means that there is a significant positive relationship. Optimism and unpleasant affect showed that the p-value = 0,000 (p<0,05) and r = -0,559, which means that there is a significant negative relationship. Optimism and life satisfaction showed that the p-value = 0,000 (p<0,05) and r = 0,457, which means that there is a significant positive relationship. Therefore all of the hypothesis are accepted.
