Abstract
Heat treatment is a process of heating and cooling a metal in a solid state with the aim of changing the physical properties of the metal being heated. Induction heating is a metal heating technique by utilizing electromagnetic induction from high frequency AC waves, which is more efficient and faster than heating using a conventional metal heating furnace. This study aims to determine the value of the hardness of a steel due to heat stiffening using induction heating with several treatments. The research method used is an experimental research method with the aim of causality based on experiments carried out directly on the treatment given. The variation used in this study is heat treatment in the form of quenching using water and oil cooling media as well as normalizing with the same temperature of 800oC with a heating time of 4 minutes, the to find out the results of the hardness values, Rockwell test were carried out.The results obtained from this study there was an increase in the highes hardness with an average value of 96 HRC on the water quenching method, 95.5 HRC on the oil quenching method, on normalizing there was a decrease with an average hardness of 92 HRC, from the hardness value on raw material of 95 HRC These results show that heat treatment using induction heating can effect the hardness value of a steel depending on how the method is used and has a fast heating process time to reach the desired temperature.
