Abstract

UNICEF is an organization created by the United Nations, and has played an important role since they were assigned to be responsible for the delivery of humanitarian and development assistance around the world. UNICEF is currently working in 190 countries and territories where there are the most disadvantaged children and youth in the world, protecting their rights, particularly in access to clean water, safe food supplies, health education, as well as vaccines to reduce or eliminate infectious diseases may infect children. UNICEF is also the international organization that provides the world's largest vaccine, which is why it played an important role in helping Nigeria escape the never ending Polio emergency, as the only country in Africa that still has Polio. This study uses the theory of International Organizations, and the Concept of the Role of International Organizations by Clive Archer (1983) which divides the role of UNICEF into 3 roles, namely 1) as an instrument; 2.) as a place/ arena; and 3.) as an independent actor. By using the dimensions of UNICEF and Humanitarian Action which consists of 3 pillars: 1.) eradication; 2.) integration; and 3.) certification and detention. The conclusion of this study proves that UNICEF has an important role in bringing Nigeria finally declared free of polio liars, after no new cases were reported in 2016 to 2020. This is because of the well-targeted GPEI program design and commitment from all actors namely the national government, UNICEF , WHO and other vaccine alliances in the world.
