Abstract

Seaweed Gracilaria sp is one natural ingredient that does not cause resistance to the disease in living organisms because it has a secondary metabolite that can kill bacteria. The purpose of this research is to conduct extraction of Gracilaria sp allegedly to have bioactive compounds as antibacterial, determining the zone of inhibition of growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus from the extract Gracilaria sp the most well-used, determining the minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) of Gracilaria sp extract on the growth of E. coli and S. aureus. The experiment was conducted in December 2010 - January 2011. Preparation of seaweed extracts using the method of maseration while testing antibacterial activity using agar diffusion method. The results showed that the extract of Gracilaria sp inhibits the growth of E. coli and S. aureus as indicated by the no color of nodes around the extract. The value of inhibition zone against E. coli by 14.33 ± 3.22 mm, while S. aureus bacteria indicate the value inhibition zone of 12.67 ± 2.08 mm. Between the two tested bacterias againts extracts of Gracilaria sp, E. coli showed a smaller resistance, as shown by the inhibition zone larger than S. aureus. The Minimum inhibitory concentration of extract of Gracilaria sp against bacterial species E. coli and S. aureus are at a concentration of 0.05%.
